OMAHA

A friend was getting married in Nebraska. A place that I had never thought about or ever had any interest in visiting. I had imagined it flat and endless cornfields.

This was not that.

We flew out early in the morning. My only trip this year was going to see a friend get married, and the place for me was not the main focus. That didn’t mean that I didn’t want to take advantage to explore a new city I had never been to before.

The first thing that struck me was how inconvenient Omaha was for getting around on foot.

If something appeared to be a short distance on the map it turned out to be a longer hike that I’m used to. Even just going over one block. Had to learn this the hard way though. Because we didn’t rent a car we tried their public transport on the first day. However, we spent more time waiting for buses even for a trip that was only supposed to be ten minutes.

It was so hot, with no shade. So obviously I was melting.

Before our trip, the Alis had decided to extend our stay by one day. Since it was probably going to be the only trip we were making this year.

After a rough start we had a solution. Electric city bikes—a perfect compromise. Faster than walking and more convenient than public transport. We traveled on a bike trail from our hotel to our first Omaha landmark, the zoo.

The bike trail took us directly to the zoo. However, decided to visit downtown Omaha as a second stop and there were no direct bike trails. On streets that seemed to designed specifically around traffic, but with not so many cars. The main streets made the perfect way to get around.

A little advice, try to know what you are going to do before you go somewhere. With no plans we wanted to make sure we did something we couldn’t necessarily do somewhere else.

But I didn’t know what landmarks we had to see or what food we should try.

I didn’t feel as comfortable but Alis and I quickly got the hang of it.
